If you are ready to try out the Cookie Diet, then you may be a small concerned about the price of purchasing those specially formulated cookies. The exact recipe for these cookies is a secret that Dr. Siegal keeps to himself. All we know about the cookies is what we see on the mark of the product which claims to have 150 calories, 23 grams of carbohydrates, 4.5 grams of stout, and 5 grams of protein. That high protein number is the special secret to curbing your appetite and putting your hunger on hold.
But, if price is a huge concern for you, then you may want to try one of the following recipes to lower the expense. They claim to know the secret of Dr. Siegal’s recipe; but, the accuracy has not been confirmed.
Recipe 1
1 cup oat dry and uncooked bran
3/4 cup orange juice
1 cup + 1 T applesauce, unsweetened
2 T canola oil
1 cup honey
1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3 lg eggs
1½ T vanilla extract
1 T grated orange rind or 2 tsp
orange extract
3 cups whole-wheat pastry flour*
1 T baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
1 cup nonfat dry milk
2½ cups oats (quick-cooking or ancient-fashioned)
1 cup nuts
1 cup raisins
1 cup ground fl ax seed (opt)
Mix the first two ingredients together in a bowl and soak them together for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile combine applesauce, honey, oil, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and orange rind in a large bowl, and mix together using an electric mixer until the contents are smooth.
Measure out the flour, baking powder, and baking soda through a sifter and sift over the applesauce mixture.
Add the soaked oat bran and remaining ingredients to the large bowl and mix with a spoon. Form the cookies by scooping out heaping tablespoons onto your baking surface about an inch apart.
Stagger trays 1 to the left and 1 to the right, to allow air circulation around each outer edge.
Bake until lightly browned — about 12 to 14 minutes.
Recipe 2
2 1/4 cups chex multi-bran cereal
1 cup rolled oat
3/4 cup non-stout powdered milk
1/4 cup unprocessed wheat bran
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 large ripe banana, mashed
4 tablespoons salted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
7 large egg whites
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
Preheat oven to 375°.
Combine first eight ingredients in large bowl. Mix well with spoon.
Blend banana, butter, sugar, eggs, egg whites, and vanilla at medium speed with an electric mixer until well incorporated.
Add wet ingredients to dry, mix well and allow to stand for 5 minutes.
Divide in half, then half again.
Each part makes 6 cookies.
Bake for 12 minutes on cookie sheet or parchment paper.
Cookies spread very small during baking. Allow to cool slightly and transfer to wire rack.
